My Role

Working on the UX and UI for the Wheel of Fortune AKA Seasonal Wheel for improved engagement and Sink Depth

Duration

2 Week Design Sprint

Context

Two Dots is a minimalist puzzle game where players connect matching-colored dots in various patterns to achieve specific goals within a limited number of moves. The gameplay feels calm and strategic, with relaxing visuals and soothing sound design, offering a mix of casual play and mental challenge as levels become more intricate over time.

We have to keep in mind that we are designing for

Overview

The Seasonal Wheel is a feature where players can earn event-specific currency by completing Saga levels on their first attempt. This currency allows them a limited number of spins on a wheel filled with valuable rewards. Additional spins can be earned by collecting more currency (MVP) or by spending gold (V1).

Benchmarking

Before diving into designing we look at real life examples of spinning wheel rewards and the primary and secondary competitors. Since this was a fairly new concept for the Match-game ecosystem, it was also important to look at references outside just the competitors.

Exploration

After the short benchmarking stage, we started off with UX Flow and Information Architecture. This stage involved multiple discussions with Game Designers and Product Managers. At this stage we also had ongoing discussions on the logic for the wheel but the high level flow and after a lot of iterations and discussions a mock prototype was created.

During ideation we directly kicked off on to exploring different options on how we can give out different types of rewards in the most exciting of ways.

Short Onboarding

To encourage player engagement with the new feature at launch, we plan to grant some free currency at the start of the event. To enhance the delivery of this message, we thought it would be beneficial to include a brief onboarding experience.

Andria will serve as the mentor for this tutorial, as Emily and Jack are already prominently featured on this screen, and we want to avoid overusing these characters.

Exposure of the Feature

The feature is introduced to players on the Saga map which is accompanied by an introductory pop-up, short onboarding and an info screen. Our main challenge was to effectively communicate the new currency, mechanic, and theme to the players.

Figma Config for Seasonal Behaviour

The wheel of wonders will be an seasonal feature, which means after every X days the feature will roll out with a new narrative and asset but same UX. For this we wanted to make sure the designers are empowered to explore and experiment how the feature would look by only adding small changes

What's more

The current iteration of the feature seems to be doing great! We are planning to begin a V2 for this, more info will be added once the readouts are shared for publishing as well ;)
